What a health coach actually does, and what I can't

Let me tell you about the moment that inspired this post. It happens more often than you would think. A woman fills out my intake form, we get on a call, and somewhere in the first ten minutes she asks me what is wrong with her.

It is such an understandable question. She is tired in a way that sleep does not fix. Her cycle has gone strange. Something is off and nobody has told her what. She has found someone who clearly cares and clearly knows a lot about nutrition, so of course she asks.

And my answer is always the same, delivered as warmly as I can manage: that is not my question to answer, and I would be doing you a disservice if I tried. But I can tell you exactly what I can do, and it might be the piece you have actually been missing.

The short version

  • I do not diagnose, treat, prescribe or cure. Those belong to licensed medical providers, period.

  • What I do is everything in between your appointments: habits, food, sleep, stress and the follow-through.

  • Your provider and I are not competing for the same job. We are doing two different jobs.

  • Knowing exactly where my lane ends is what makes me useful inside it.

What I cannot do

I want to start here, because the honest boundary is the whole foundation of the trust.

I cannot diagnose you. I cannot tell you that what you are experiencing is a thyroid condition, or an autoimmune condition, or a deficiency, or anything else with a name. Naming a condition is a medical act, it requires clinical training and clinical testing, and it belongs to your physician, your nurse practitioner, your physician assistant or another licensed provider.

I cannot treat a disease or a condition. I cannot prescribe or adjust medication, and I would never suggest you change what your provider has prescribed. I do not order tests or tell you to go request a specific lab panel. And I cannot promise to cure anything, because nobody honest can promise that.

I also want to say something that I think coaches should say out loud more often. Some of the skepticism about health coaching is earned. There are people in this field who blur these lines, who imply a diagnosis without quite saying one, who market supplements like prescriptions, who let a client believe they are getting medical care when they are not. When I meet someone who is wary of coaches, I usually understand why, and I would rather acknowledge that than pretend it is not true. The answer is not to be defensive about it. The answer is for those of us who take this seriously to be extremely clear about what we are.

I will never diagnose you. I will help you build what actually works.

What I actually do

Here is the thing about the appointment you had last month. You got maybe fifteen minutes. Your provider, who is very likely excellent and very likely overbooked, looked at your numbers, addressed the thing you came in for, and told you to eat better, sleep more and manage your stress.

All good advice. And then you walked out to your car and it was Tuesday afternoon and you had two kids to pick up and nothing had changed about how any of that would actually get done.

That gap is my entire job. Everything between your appointments. The part nobody has time to walk you through, and the part where almost all of the actual outcome lives.

Food, in a way that fits your real life

Not a meal plan photocopied for every client. We look at what you are actually eating, what you actually like, who you are actually feeding, and how much time you actually have. Then we build from there. I will help you crowd more nutrient density onto the plate, understand food quality, and make swaps that stick because they fit.

Habits, built one at a time

Most people do not need more information. They need a system for turning what they already know into what they actually do, on an ordinary week, when they are tired. That is a skill, it can be taught, and it is most of what coaching really is.

Sleep and circadian rhythm

Light, timing, wind-down, consistency. This is one of the highest-leverage areas I work in and one of the most neglected, and it is almost never what a fifteen minute appointment has time for.

Stress and nervous system support

For the women I work with, who are mostly busy moms and women in their thirties through fifties, stress is not a side topic. It is woven through hormone health and autoimmune wellness, and it deserves real, practical attention rather than the word "relax."

Nutrition and supplement education

I love this part. I will teach you how nutrients work, how they team up, what forms tend to absorb well and what a quality product looks like, so that you can walk into a store or a conversation with your provider and understand what you are looking at. Education, not prescription. And I will always encourage you to run what you are taking past your provider, because they know your medications and your history and I do not.

Accountability and follow-through

The unglamorous one that changes everything. Someone who checks in. Someone who notices when a week went sideways and helps you adjust instead of quit. Someone whose job is to still be there in week seven.

Why the line makes coaching stronger, not smaller

Here is what I have come to believe. The boundary is not a limitation on my work. It is what makes my work possible.

When I am crystal clear that I do not diagnose, a few good things happen at once. You know exactly what you are getting, so you can trust it. Your provider can see that I am supporting their care rather than second-guessing it, which makes them far more likely to welcome the partnership. And I get to pour all of my attention into the thing I am genuinely trained and genuinely good at, instead of hedging around the edges of someone else's expertise.

There is also a real practical benefit to you. Because I am not trying to be your doctor, I can be something your doctor cannot be: available, unhurried and focused entirely on the daily execution. Your provider gets fifteen minutes and a diagnosis. I get all the weeks in between and the follow-through. That is not a smaller role. It is just a different one, and honestly, it is often the one that decides how things turn out.

  • Your provider: Diagnoses conditions. Me, your coach: Supports the daily habits around them.

  • Your provider: Orders and interprets testing. Me, your coach: Helps you prepare good questions for that appointment.

  • Your provider: Prescribes and manages medication. Me, your coach: Teaches nutrition and supplement basics, and sends you back to them to confirm.

  • Your provider: Treats disease. Me, your coach: Builds the food, sleep and stress foundation underneath.

  • Your provider: Sees you at intervals. Me, your coach: Walks with you in between.

And if something comes up in our work that belongs in a medical office, I will tell you so and send you there. Every time. That is part of the job too.

My training, plainly stated

I think you deserve to know exactly what is behind the advice you are getting, so here it is without any inflation.

I am a Certified Holistic Health Coach, trained through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I started my training with IIN back in 2012, and I have been continuing my education through IIN since 2023, because this field keeps moving and I want to move with it. I am also Board Certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP).

What that training is: deep, structured education in nutrition, behavior change, coaching skills and whole-person wellness, plus a professional standard I am accountable to. What that training is not: medical school. It does not make me a physician, a dietitian or a licensed clinician, and I will not present it as something it is not. I would rather you know exactly what I am than be impressed by something I am not.

So which one do you need

Usually both, and usually at the same time.

If something feels wrong in your body and you do not know why, start with your provider. That is the right door, and I will say so.

If you have the information and cannot seem to turn it into daily life, if you have been told to fix your diet and your sleep and your stress and you are staring at that list wondering where on earth to begin, or if you want someone in your corner who actually has time for you, that is me. That is exactly the space I work in.

Want to talk it through? My Discovery Call is $25, and it is a real conversation, not a sales pitch. We look at what is going on, and I will tell you honestly whether coaching is the right fit or whether your next step belongs somewhere else. If you decide to continue, that $25 is credited toward your coaching. To set one up, book it here and I will email you within one business day to find a time that works. Not ready for a call yet?
